A iconic Geneva location steeped in history
Port-Gitana, located in Bellevue in the canton of Geneva, is an iconic spot on the shores of Lake Geneva with a rich and fascinating history. Its origins date back to 1875, when Baroness Julie de Rothschild, passionate about the lake, acquired a strip of land in Bellevue. She had an Anglo-Norman style pavilion built there, along with a jetty to welcome her steamboats, including the famous “Gitana I”, one of the fastest of its time.
Over the years, Port-Gitana has welcomed many illustrious guests, including royalty and famous personalities. After the death of the Baroness in 1907, the site changed hands and underwent various transformations. In the 1930s, under the direction of Sam Guichard, it became a hub of artistic activity, hosting performances and renowned artists.
From the 1970s onwards, the municipality of Bellevue gradually began acquiring the parcels of Port-Gitana.
